Understanding overweight and obesity

Overweight and obesity is a major problem affecting people of all countries and races. Overweight and obesity are terms used to describe people who whose body weight is greater than what is considered normal with respect to their height.

The best way to determine if you are overweight or obese is to calculate your body mass index abbreviated as BMI. No body chooses to be overweight. We only choose to be lazy and eat more than we are supposed to because we cannot control our appetite.

A study was conducted in Yaounde on the Prevalence of overweight and obesity for urban adults in Cameroon by Pasquet et al. The results of the study showed that prevalence rates of overweight (BMI of 25 and above) and obesity (BMI of 30 and above) increased from 20-29 years of age in both men and women. Furthermore, overweight and obesity was at its peak for men aged 40-49 and women aged 50-59 years before it started to decline. This study also showed that for every two women, one is overweight and for every five women, one is obese. On the other hand, one-third of men were overweight and 5% were obese.

When we eat more calories than we use, the excess of it is stored as fats. If this continues on and on, the result of this will be overweight and obesity.
