Why am I feeling my heartbeat?

Some people become very afraid when they feel their own heart beating. It is a frightful experience to some. You may sometimes feel that your heart is skipping some beats or is beating too fast. You can feel it in your thoat, neck or chest. Palpitations is the medical term that discribes this feeling. In Africa people misconstrue this condition as a premonition of something evil. Most at times, palpitations are not harmful except when it is coupled with other signs as you will see below.

Causes of Heart Palpitations

1) Causes that are not related to your heart

when you experience palpitations, it might be a signal that something is wrong with your heart. It can also occur as a result of other factors not related to your heart such as:
  •  Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • vogorous physical activity
  • Medication such as decongestants, high blood pressure medicines and diet pills
  • Hormonal changes during menopause
  • caffiene
  • Alcohol
  • cocaine and other drugs
  • Eating heavy meals containing rich and spicey foods
  • Pregnancy
  • smoking
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • nervousness
Palpitations caused by the above factors will usually go away on their own.

2) Probable conditions that signal that something is wrong with your heart

  • when you have had a previous heart attack
  • when you have heart failure
  • Problems with the valves and muscles of your heart
  • when you have coronary artery disease
If you suffer from the above conditions then a heart palpitation may warrant that you consult your cardiologist for possible checkups.
